Almost half the American populace appears to support the clear beginnings of fascism.

One particularly informative quote:
The survey showed that 27 percent of respondents supported requiring all Muslim Americans to register where they lived with the federal government. Twenty-two percent favored racial profiling to identify potential terrorist threats. And 29 percent thought undercover agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer organizations to keep tabs on their activities and fund-raising.

The dumbest thing here is that researchers were startled that it correlates with television news and/or religion. DUUUUUUUUUH!

Not surprised at all.

Disgusted. Perhaps a tiny bit surprised that so few people recognize this, even among moderates and liberals. But mostly disappointed in them.

Interesting saying. Wish I knew how to pronounce it, cause that'd be a beauty to say to people. He he he. (With my luck, I'd tell it to a conservative who understood and then ripped me a new one in the same language.)

Is it really correct to say "heartfelt" disgust? I mean, that presupposes an organ which many of them have aptly demonstrated a singular lack of. :-)

What a beauty of a comment, hehehe... If I would not have had a quite serious falling out on just this ground with the person in question, I could hardly resist quoting that last sentence to him ;-)! (And if that weren't you, I would be tempted to say you outdid yourself :- )!) Will have to store it for later use, if the guy ever talks to me again... Are you positive no one of your (presumably quite academic) friends can pronounce "Geist" for you? Try an american "gist" and insert an e like in you were about to say weary? All of the e's in german go that way. The st needs some sharper pronouncement, maybe you have heard yiddish, as in Shtetl? Good luck :-P. It IS an excellent way to piss them off....
No idea who minted that. But my mother would quote it a lot, usually with a big sigh, when one of the other side's protagonists fucked up badly once more...
