Almost half the American populace appears to support the clear beginnings of fascism.

One particularly informative quote:
The survey showed that 27 percent of respondents supported requiring all Muslim Americans to register where they lived with the federal government. Twenty-two percent favored racial profiling to identify potential terrorist threats. And 29 percent thought undercover agents should infiltrate Muslim civic and volunteer organizations to keep tabs on their activities and fund-raising.

The dumbest thing here is that researchers were startled that it correlates with television news and/or religion. DUUUUUUUUUH!

How..interesting. Glad I don't live on that side of the pond. o.O

If you were, you'd be all pissy about the sample size and how the survey can't possibly be accurate because you're a Republican and you don't think Muslims should be shot on sight have to register.

I found the data in Table 3 of the report as disturbing as that relating to Muslims:

64% of Republicans believe that the Internet (including email) should be monitored by the government (only 34% of Dems think so)
76% of Republicans agree with indefinitely detaining terrorist suspects (55% of Dems, huh morons come in all shapes and sizes, I guess)
42% of Republicans think certain 'un-American' activities should be outlawed, even if specifically protected by the Constitution (30% of Dems)
62% of Republicans agree that the government should lie to the public for the good of the country (42% of Dems-- it was worded as lie about the military during war... what war, the War on Drugs? the War on Terror? the War on Civil Liberties?
48% of Republicans say the media should NOT cover protests (26% of Dems)
45% of Republicans say the media should NOT report criticisms of government policy (25% of Dems)

And hey, a silver lining... 50% of Republicans say individuals (but presumably not groups or Muslims or other brown-skinned people) should be allowed to protest and criticize the govt.

Last one out, turn out the lights.

scary.

"Researchers also found that respondents who paid more attention to television news were more likely to fear terrorist attacks and support limiting the rights of Muslim Americans."
What IS there on you "news"?! No background information? No historical context whatever? But then - I am not convinced that Europe would do much better...

Hey, I'm all for registering Muslims.

Right after we register all Christians. And once they are registered, start getting all the other religious schools of thought, in descending order of group size. Agnostics and Atheists cannot be lumped together, though.

I'm of the percent that thinks the Internet (especially email) is already being monitored by the government.
I think 76% of Republicans are terrorists who need to be detained indefinitely, and likewise 55% of Dems.
I think we can cut that down to 34% of Reps, 25% Dems. The rest should be shot.
Well, hell, lets round up 62% Reps and 42% Dems and tell them the guns aren't loaded. Then shoot them.
If any of the 48% Reps, 26% Dems are left, herd them into concentration camps and don't worry about negative publicity - no media will cover it.
Wait, no, shoot the bastards. I'm sure the 45% R/25% D are in those groups.

Those who give up my liberty for their security deserve a lead enema.

Despite repeated claims of "liberal media"...

The most unregulated and outrageous bullshit in the media seems to be coming from the Hard Right.

Faux, er, Fox News is, in fact, purely dedicated to demonizing liberals under the blatantly false title of "Fair and Balanced" news. And they've won at least one court case allowing them to deliberately lie to the public. THAT is scary.

The ones who crow the loudest about personal responsibility and integrity are the ones who have the least of it.
From: [identity profile] saminz.livejournal.com
Indeed. There was a lawsuit here a few years ago that ended with allowing parties to lie openly in their election campaign material. Bad enough. But in the media..!? That's beyond scary. You still sound somewhat surprised that the bullshit comes from the "hard" Right. How come? Nobody ever told you that "Der Geist steht immer links"? It's hard to translate, but evident. The "Intellectual Spirit" (maybe...) lives on the left. Just a fact of life :-).
Even if I frequently earn some heartfelt disgust from the not-so-left-inclined for that one.

Not surprised at all.

Disgusted. Perhaps a tiny bit surprised that so few people recognize this, even among moderates and liberals. But mostly disappointed in them.

Interesting saying. Wish I knew how to pronounce it, cause that'd be a beauty to say to people. He he he. (With my luck, I'd tell it to a conservative who understood and then ripped me a new one in the same language.)

Is it really correct to say "heartfelt" disgust? I mean, that presupposes an organ which many of them have aptly demonstrated a singular lack of. :-)

Television news == infotainment.

Even the best news programs are ratings whores. And fear generates ratings, so it is rare to find television news that isn't sensationalized. The other thing you have to keep in mind is the average USian operates at about a 6th grade level (12 years old--or younger if compared to European education). News programs are simplified to not insult the 'intelligence' of the majority of their viewers.

Hmmm, it has possibilities. Bet the Scientologists would be the first to change their mind about whether they're a religion or not. :)

It's t-shirt slogan time, woohoo.

What a beauty of a comment, hehehe... If I would not have had a quite serious falling out on just this ground with the person in question, I could hardly resist quoting that last sentence to him ;-)! (And if that weren't you, I would be tempted to say you outdid yourself :- )!) Will have to store it for later use, if the guy ever talks to me again... Are you positive no one of your (presumably quite academic) friends can pronounce "Geist" for you? Try an american "gist" and insert an e like in you were about to say weary? All of the e's in german go that way. The st needs some sharper pronouncement, maybe you have heard yiddish, as in Shtetl? Good luck :-P. It IS an excellent way to piss them off....
No idea who minted that. But my mother would quote it a lot, usually with a big sigh, when one of the other side's protagonists fucked up badly once more...

I guess the main problem then - if they can lie all they want - is that you urgently need some "liberal media" for the ones above average to compare their information... The guardian comes to mind. Maybe these guys should start running ads on your tv: "And if you want to know what really went down, check your friendly guardian.co.uk ;-). Or whatever valid paper you have there, online...?

If I were a *real* conspiracy theorist

I would say the desire to cut us off from outside news sources was a prime motivator in George Tenet's recent call to limit access to the Internet. Yes, it was couched in terms of keeping corporate data and infrastructure safe, but the neocons have consistently revealed their core fear of free-flowing information.

But I'm not... yet. ;)

Perhaps you mean "stress" instead of "insult".

To insult one's intelligence is to talk over-simply so the victim is insulted by the implication he cannot understand what you would normally say.

In other words, me use small words so dumb you get it. Got it? ;-)

You can't be a conspiracy theorist...

Takes no "conspiracy" or "theory" to see them wish for things like that. How's that sound for wild theory: They invaded Iraq because they were so jealous that those guys could just ban satellite dishes (means internet, there) and they couldn't ;-)? Now THAT would be a bit unrealistic. Or would it :-P?
