Unofficially, I was let go around 10:30AM today, along with 200+ other members of my corporation, some of whom have been working there for over 20 years.
So now I'm digging around trying to find my old resume and blow the dust off of it. Blech.
I've got at least three folk willing to give me a good reference, despite corporate policy. Heh. Go team!
And I am hoping to reach a relative that works in a nearby city. He might be able to squeeze me in. Hopefully I'll have good news soon, as I only get paid through the end of the year. Merry fucking Christmas. :-)

Whoa, that sucks!
Date: 2004-11-04 03:25 pm (UTC)Sorry to hear that. Why were so many let go?
We got caught.
Date: 2004-11-04 03:36 pm (UTC)And it's not the end, either. They just lied to everyone and said it was.
But they told the same lies 4 years ago when they did the same thing. And the layoffs continued sporadically for the next year after that.
Main difference is that 4 years ago there were a few more jobs, and the severance package was quite a bit better. Ah, well.

Date: 2004-11-04 03:36 pm (UTC)Well that's a real bitch.
Date: 2004-11-04 03:41 pm (UTC)Heh, I'm sure some of us would give you a good reference. ;P

good luck finding a replacement position! But at least it sounds like your severance package was better than mine, so you have a reasonable amount of time to find a new position.
We're not there, yet.

I agree with thewrongcrowd though, I think you'd find quite a few UFies willing to give you good references. Heck, *I'd* give you a glowing reference.
Most companies today will not allow employees to act
Date: 2004-11-04 05:13 pm (UTC)I can see both sides.
Date: 2004-11-05 08:07 am (UTC)But it does "retain by fear", and it makes it much harder for an employee to get another job if they can't get anyone to recommend them.
I've heard of or actually seen both types of abuse.

Date: 2004-11-04 05:08 pm (UTC)Either way, I hope you find something soon. If I had any say here, or if they paid worth a damn.. oh well.
We'll be thinking about you. Good luck. {{Naruki}}
They did the exit interview and had me sign the papers
Date: 2004-11-04 05:15 pm (UTC)Thanks for the wishes!
I'm so sorry to hear that.

that flickin' bites.
Date: 2004-11-04 07:07 pm (UTC)That does suck
Date: 2004-11-04 07:56 pm (UTC)That sucks.
Date: 2004-11-04 09:10 pm (UTC)Spencer
That is tough
Date: 2004-11-04 09:38 pm (UTC)Awww...Rats.
Date: 2004-11-04 11:46 pm (UTC){{{{{Naruki}}}}}
Well crap.
Date: 2004-11-05 03:24 am (UTC)Seriously, though, best of luck.
Fer sherr

Date: 2004-11-05 05:41 am (UTC)You might want to consider a career change. For some reason I could see you as an english teacher ;-P In fact I have this vision of a grammar soup natzi english teacher--"whom instead of who? Bah! No soup for you!"
Seriously though, just let my husband and I know if there is anything we can do to help you and your family.
Wow that sucks
Date: 2004-11-05 07:36 am (UTC)I'm sorry to hear that.
Date: 2004-11-06 10:42 am (UTC)"I'm sorry to hear that." "That must be very frustrating for you." "I'm sorry; that shouldn't have happened and I see why you're angry."
But in this case, it's literally true that I am sorry to hear that you lost your job. Although I don't know you in "real life," I think you're smart, wickedly funny, and a good human being. And so it's upsetting to hear that you fell victim to the vicissitudes of corporate managers scrambling to cover their sorry butts.
*That was an hourly position which I lost due to "consolidation" the week before Christmas. Gack. I'm just a member of the studentry now, and fortunately they can't fire me from my classes.

Date: 2004-11-08 11:47 am (UTC)Otherwise, I may get to see how well I can do in Japan sooner than I expected. That is going to be one heck of a mess, especially trying to dispose of all my stuff prior to leaving. Ah, well.
Re: Thanks!
Date: 2004-11-08 11:51 pm (UTC)Sorry to hear about the job, though. We went through that about 18 months ago. Ah, job security. Good luck to you!

Date: 2004-11-12 06:37 pm (UTC)Late reply,
Date: 2004-11-14 03:26 pm (UTC)Best of luck finding something acceptable in rapid fashion. They'd be fools not to have you, whoever they end up being.
So sorry to hear that, honey!
Date: 2004-11-15 09:54 am (UTC)I hope you find something soon. I hope we both do.
Kindest regards,
NOLAWitch
Me too.
Date: 2004-11-15 09:15 pm (UTC)On the plus side, you got to say "got laid" and "get the shaft" in the same paragraph. That's gotta count for something. ;-)
Re: Me too.
Date: 2004-11-16 05:14 pm (UTC)I miss you on UF, pal. Keep your chin up and get another job soon. I know where to come to see how you're doing. You can also gmail me anytime you get the hankering.
NOLAWitch
Nope.
Date: 2004-11-16 06:01 pm (UTC)You may think you know where to come, but even if you're right that knowledge will soon be outdated. We cannot afford the rent past this year (until I cash in my 401k to live off of).
It's looking pretty likely that we'll be saying sayonara to Bushland. I just hope we can find jobs there.
