Unofficially, I was let go around 10:30AM today, along with 200+ other members of my corporation, some of whom have been working there for over 20 years.

So now I'm digging around trying to find my old resume and blow the dust off of it. Blech.

I've got at least three folk willing to give me a good reference, despite corporate policy. Heh. Go team!

And I am hoping to reach a relative that works in a nearby city. He might be able to squeeze me in. Hopefully I'll have good news soon, as I only get paid through the end of the year. Merry fucking Christmas. :-)

Whoa, that sucks!

And blows too. {{{Naruki}}} Hope your contacts pull through. Christmas is a crappy time of year to be unemployed.

Sorry to hear that. Why were so many let go?

We got caught.

Doing something illegal, that is. And this is how we cut costs so the bigger shareholders don't get flatter wallets.

And it's not the end, either. They just lied to everyone and said it was.

But they told the same lies 4 years ago when they did the same thing. And the layoffs continued sporadically for the next year after that.

Main difference is that 4 years ago there were a few more jobs, and the severance package was quite a bit better. Ah, well.

What a bucketload of sewage! I'm sorry to hear that you're unemployed, but I hope it turns into something better. At least there's some severance, it could be worse I guess. Good luck in your search !

Heh, I'm sure some of us would give you a good reference. ;P

is this something you could have some fun ranting about over at http://www.fuckedcompany.com/ ? Are they reporting it there yet?

{{{you}}}

good luck finding a replacement position! But at least it sounds like your severance package was better than mine, so you have a reasonable amount of time to find a new position.

We're not there, yet.

When life gives you lemonades, make juice. When life starts throwing rocks at you, however...

I agree with thewrongcrowd though, I think you'd find quite a few UFies willing to give you good references. Heck, *I'd* give you a glowing reference.

as a reference for other employees for legal reasons. The policy is usually to forward all phone calls to HR where they will give out length of employ and job title type info only.
(deleted comment)

I can see both sides.

Overall, I think it sucks royally. I can see where someone who gets a bad review might sue the company, even if the bad review was deserved. So that's one for the company's side.

But it does "retain by fear", and it makes it much harder for an employee to get another job if they can't get anyone to recommend them.

I've heard of or actually seen both types of abuse.

Crappity crap. Unofficially?

Either way, I hope you find something soon. If I had any say here, or if they paid worth a damn.. oh well.

We'll be thinking about you. Good luck. {{Naruki}}

I know we do not always agree on stuff, but it is tough to lose your job through no fault of your own. When I lost my job after I lost the use of my left arm/hand and walked all gimpyish I was major pissed. I found something better. You can do it. Do not let the bastards drag you down.

Good luck with the search. I hear there are a lot of custodial engineering jobs opening up due to nearly half the country's waves of nausea this week. Or maybe you should try joining one of the companies funded by Bush... then you'll know there won't be cutbacks (but would it really worth the inevitable murderous rampage?). ;)

Seriously, though, best of luck.

You talking about Bush or my ex-company?

My sympathies dear. It is a sad world that we live in now when the average person can't feel at ease about their job security. It makes home ownership a scary thing indeed.

You might want to consider a career change. For some reason I could see you as an english teacher ;-P In fact I have this vision of a grammar soup natzi english teacher--"whom instead of who? Bah! No soup for you!"

Seriously though, just let my husband and I know if there is anything we can do to help you and your family.

Wow that sucks

As far as congratulations and condolences go, the English language does not have a plentiful stock of fresh, meaningful utterances. What can I say, in these circumstances, that I haven't also said to "irate customers" who called up when their newspapers were wet?*

"I'm sorry to hear that." "That must be very frustrating for you." "I'm sorry; that shouldn't have happened and I see why you're angry."

But in this case, it's literally true that I am sorry to hear that you lost your job. Although I don't know you in "real life," I think you're smart, wickedly funny, and a good human being. And so it's upsetting to hear that you fell victim to the vicissitudes of corporate managers scrambling to cover their sorry butts.

*That was an hourly position which I lost due to "consolidation" the week before Christmas. Gack. I'm just a member of the studentry now, and fortunately they can't fire me from my classes.

I am -so- sorry to read this latest bit of news from you and I think this sucks hairy monkey toes in a big way. I'm late commenting because I haven't been online much at all lately but I wanted to let you know that I'm reading your updates when I have a chance to sneak online and now I'm sending you a lot of juicy "new fantastic job" vibes, or at least "mediocre job that pays the bills" vibes. ;)

Thanks!

Hopefully I'll catch them quickly. ;-)

Otherwise, I may get to see how well I can do in Japan sooner than I expected. That is going to be one heck of a mess, especially trying to dispose of all my stuff prior to leaving. Ah, well.

On the plus side, you got to say "got laid" and "get the shaft" in the same paragraph. That's gotta count for something. ;-)

We didn't work for the same company, did we? Was your company under investigation by the Attorney General of New York? Is its name a synonym for "swamp"?

I miss you on UF, pal. Keep your chin up and get another job soon. I know where to come to see how you're doing. You can also gmail me anytime you get the hankering.

Mine was under criminal charges in a South American country, and rather than pay the penalty we may just abandon ship. Come January there will be another wave of layoffs, beyond the approximately 240 we just had. Plus we've had a number of quitters.

You may think you know where to come, but even if you're right that knowledge will soon be outdated. We cannot afford the rent past this year (until I cash in my 401k to live off of).

It's looking pretty likely that we'll be saying sayonara to Bushland. I just hope we can find jobs there.
